International Conference:
Issues of Identity in and across Cultures
and Professional Worlds

Rome, 25-27 October 2007

The international conference Issues of Identity in and across Cultures and Professional Worlds will take place at the University for Sports Science (IUSM) in Rome, Italy, on October 25 – 27, 2007.

The main objective of the conference is to provide a platform for scholars and practitioners to share views on the subject of Identity and the way(s) it is manifested in different fields of knowledge and practice, in and across cultures.

Identity is a multifaceted and pervasive notion which involves language, culture and communication. It is thus becoming more and more relevant, in an era of globalisation, to study the ways in which ‘belonging to a group’, be it ethnic, national and cultural, gender or minority, is manifested through language and/or other communication forms in professional encounters and exchanges.

The theme of the conference draws on the concept of interaction and/or conflict and negotiation of identity, both in individuals operating across cultures and in cross-cultural encounters.

Invited plenary speakers who have confirmed their participation are Vijay Bhatia, Christopher Candlin and John Flowerdew.

We invite contributions on the theme of identity in and across cultures and professions in the following domains:

  • Linguistic and cultural identity
  • Professional identities
  • Cross-cultural communication
  • Interaction and conflict
  • Local and global identities

Topics may include any of the following areas:

  • gender
  • the media
  • advertising and branding
  • business communication
  • organisational communication
  • political communication
  • legal communication
  • academic communication
  • disciplinary and cross-disciplinary communication
